For our production we made a music video for the song, 'Running Through The 7th With My Woadies' by the soundcloud made rappers, $UICIDEBOY$. During the devising process we decided to base the premise of our music video on the representation of the youth in contemporary media. The song accompanied our aim of representation with a solemn but powerful feel and the cult fan base is predominately followed by young people.

Applying Giroux's theory of the representation of the youth in the media we were able to establish our portrayal of young people. Giroux refers to the youth as an 'empty category' and are never truly presented due to adults in the media creating these fake portrayals, not the youth themselves. Giroux conveys how the youth are clearly mistreated within the media as adults do not really understand what it is like as a young person in this generation. Giroux's theory also suggests that adults don't want their generation to be bad and are using teenagers as a scapegoat. Representation of youth is molded together through what adults believe and think. This leads to stereotypes through the media and cause moral panics of young people. This has been created through hegemony. This theory was fabricated in 1997, however the concept is still relevant in our production and society. Using this theory we have attempted to represent the youth in a way that portrays the reality, issues and other aspects of the youth today as we are young people creating a piece of media about the youth.

Our preferred reading of our music video is to highlight the youth of today and to create the sense that they are mistreated in terms of the media and in society. We attempted to imply that there is more to the youth then what is represented through multiple devices. The opening shot of our music video begins with a tranquil neutral shot of the sea, with birds flying over. This connotes a sense of freedom in which the youth today should feel but are restricted. Our second long shot of 'Never grow up' was taken in Dreamland, a place, along with the sea, that are influential in our youth. The bright colors and the setting itself conveys the innocence of young people which is beginning to become less prominent and the 'Never grow up' reinforces this. The long shot of the round about connotes the feeling of ever lasting youth which is becoming less prevalent in recent times. Through this we attempted to allow our target audience of predominantly young people from around 16-24 to relive youthful dreams and memories and ‘Never grow up’.

The hazy and gritty look we created in the music video in order to create a raw representation of the youth portrays the truth of young people’s lives. The connotations of this was to build a dream like feel and the setting of the broken down fort/castle created a sense of nirvana. The shots involving the arch way was an attempt to reinforce the heavenly feel, and a transcendent state is created. The calm and slow instrumental parts of the song helps to highlight this. We recognized the intense and fiery sections of our chosen song and used this to present the multiple sides of young people. The stereotype of the youth today being violent, aggressive and anti social is still a main theme in the media. We have used the fire in our video to highlight this aggression, however this anger is towards the adults who have being representing the youth in an unfair and false way. The close ups of the fire implies the spark in young people which shouldn’t be seen to be angry or reclusive but to show the restrictions of the youth which has been represented in the media.

Looking at other theorists, such as Accland, gave us an understanding of how the youth are still mistreated in the media by being portrayed as ‘delinquent youths’ which enhances hegemony. This is done by the ideal of ‘normal’ adult and youth behavior which contrasts deviant youth behavior which tends to be the main portrayal in contemporary media. Despite this not being necessarily all true we have applied Accland’s theory with certain shots and scenes. The use of the cigarette supports this theory. Furthermore the shot in which the young person is sat on the fort includes a ‘middle finger to society’ which is a reoccurring idea within young people. The bright lights in the background of this shot connotes hope for the youth with a light in the darkness. Accland’s theory includes the ideology of protection implying the youth must be constantly watched. This is felt by young people and we have attempted to portray this by having the young person in the music video to look directly at the camera.

We decided that the skull ski mask that is worn in our music video would represent the dead faceless anonymity of youth. The inclusion of youth culture with the shots of the young person skating was chosen as it is a clear representation of what is popular within the youth. The media also publicizes skateboarding massively.

I feel like we were fairly successful in conveying our preferred reading of the youth of today. We attempted to represent the youth in a way that hasn't been explored as young people tend not to portray themselves. Our music video was an attempt to connote the different aspects of the youth today.
